What WordRunner costs

Reading and much of the practice are free. AI marking is paid for with in-app credits (¥). 100 ¥ costs CHF 0.60 or £0.53. 1,000 ¥ covers 200 sentences marked by AI.

Free to use

  • Reading the four books in the app, tapping any word to look up its meaning, and hearing it said where we have a recording
  • Shared notes on a word, and My Lexi for up to 50 words
  • Practice that needs no AI: spelling (a usage hint can cost 1 ¥), naming figurative devices in passages, and Squad Link games with classmates

What AI costs

A few typical prices for students.

Essay answers come at four levels, from the most help to the least:

  • Guided: feedback on each part of every paragraph, then on the whole essay
  • Supported: feedback after each paragraph, then on the whole essay
  • Independent: feedback only on the whole essay
  • Exam Condition: timed, with feedback only after you hand it in

At the Supported and Independent levels: if your earlier essays show that one part of your paragraphs needs the most work, the app switches on an extra check of that part, for 3 ¥ a paragraph (≈ CHF 0.02 · £0.02). You can switch it off before you start.

1,000 ¥ is CHF 6.00 or £5.30 at the Bank's rate. It covers, for example, 200 sentences marked by AI, or 25 three-paragraph essay answers at the Guided level. Amounts in francs and pounds are rounded to the nearest cent or penny. Prices as of October 2026.

Worked examples

  • A day's practice (Daily Practice in the app): you choose four, five or six words, and for each word you write a sentence, which AI marks for 5 ¥.
    • Four words: 20 ¥, about CHF 0.12 or £0.11
    • Five words: 25 ¥, about CHF 0.15 or £0.13
    • Six words: 30 ¥, about CHF 0.18 or £0.16
  • Thirty days of practice at four words a day: about CHF 3.60 or £3.18 (30 × 20 ¥).
  • An essay answer of three paragraphs at the Guided level: 40 ¥, about CHF 0.24 or £0.21. At this level the AI gives feedback on each part of every paragraph, then on the whole essay. The introduction and conclusion cost nothing extra.

These figures assume each sentence passes on its first try. These extras can add to them:

  • A rewritten sentence (optional): marked again for 5 ¥ (≈ CHF 0.03 · £0.03), up to two more times
  • A usage hint (optional): up to 1 ¥
  • A briefing before a day's practice (optional): 2 ¥
  • Being the first learner to practise a word with no ready-made practice: up to 2 ¥ for the AI to write it. After that it is free for everyone.

How paying works

Credits are bought in the app's Bank, in Swiss francs or in pounds. 100 ¥ costs CHF 0.60 or £0.53, and the smallest purchase is 250 ¥.

  • We add a few cents to each payment so we can match it to the right account. Those cents buy credits too.
  • A person checks every payment, and the credits are usually added within 24 hours of the payment being confirmed.
  • There are no card payments and no subscriptions, and nothing renews. Euros are not accepted yet.

Users taking part in the pilot receive an allowance of credits for the pilot phase only: 600 ¥ for a student, and 150 ¥ for a parent. It does not continue after the pilot.

A bug report we confirm earns 5 ¥, and some milestones, such as a 7-day streak, earn a few more.

For teachers

Teacher accounts are not open yet. Your students pay the prices above, and much of their practice is free.

Teacher tasks cost more than a student's, because the AI reads and writes far more: adding a word means writing its meanings once, for everyone on WordRunner, not marking one answer.

Adding a word that's new to WordRunner costs up to 22 ¥ (≈ CHF 0.13 · £0.12) for its meanings. 22 ¥ is set aside, and what isn't used comes back, so it usually costs less. For 100 new words, that's up to 2,200 ¥ (CHF 13.20 or £11.66).

Teachers buy credits in the app's Bank at the same rate. They choose between AI credits, which pay for the teacher tools, and ordinary credits, like a student's.

Building our two reading packs took over 3,000 AI calls, from their word lists to their practice questions. We paid for them, so your students use the packs free.

For parents

Giving consent costs nothing. Reading and much of the practice are free; your child's account pays the prices above for AI, and for extras such as more room in My Lexi.

Credits are bought from inside the account that will use them, so you can't buy credits for your child from a parent account yet.

Other things credits buy

  • More room in My Lexi, which holds 50 words free: room for 100 words costs 500 ¥, 250 words 750 ¥, and 500 words 1,000 ¥
  • A streak freeze, which keeps your streak going on a day you miss: 125 ¥

Planned: premium reading packs, and a marketplace for study material made by teachers.

Giving credits and sponsoring

A class can have a shared pot of credits. When a student's own credits fall below 3 ¥, the pot pays for some AI marking and practice sentences, up to five a day.

Members aged 16 or over who have bought credits themselves can give some to their class's pot. We approve each gift.

Sponsors can fill a class's pot too: see For Sponsors.

How we keep prices low

  • What the AI has written once is kept and used again. A practice sentence or word-form exercise written for a word is kept, so the learners after the first usually pay nothing for it. Once a person has checked a learner's deeper notes on a word, some of them can be shown free to other learners who save that word.
  • Each AI task runs on a model chosen for it. Marking and the practice the AI writes run on Google's Gemini 3.7 Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash, chosen task by task after testing. For some tasks, the model that costs less per answer did as well, so we chose it.
  • Much of the practice needs no AI at all.

We've already built two reading packs of classic books, and they're free to add: Frankenstein with The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Hound of the Baskervilles with A Scandal in Bohemia. A third is planned: The Sign of Four with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
