FOR STUDENTS

What you can do in WordRunner

In addition to Daily Practice on the words your class or reading pack sets, you can build your own word collection, read classic books in the app's reader, have AI mark your writing and squad up with classmates. Depending on your class, Daily Practice asks you to fill in the missing word, spell it from its meaning (with hints when you get stuck) and write your own sentence with it, which AI marks. On the same words you can also play Definition Detective and Word Court, which have paid AI steps too.

Signing up needs a code from your teacher or from us. AI marking is paid for with in-app credits.

Under 16 in the EU, the UK or Switzerland? We ask a parent to agree by email first.

Practice

Practise the words your class or reading pack sets, and the ones you save yourself. Words you have studied come back for review.

After a practice round, look back over your words, with synonyms and other details where we have them.

You can also pick one kind of practice for your class or reading-pack words from your dashboard: Gap Analysis, where you fill in the missing word, or Prove You Can Use Them, where you write a sentence with each word and AI marks it, paid for with in-app credits. In Gap Analysis, AI writes the sentences, and a new one can cost in-app credits too.

Your dashboard also leads to Specialist Modules: more exercises, such as Grammar Practice, Reading Comprehension and Paragraph Cohesion. AI marks every Reading Comprehension answer and some answers in the other two, paid for with in-app credits.

My Lexi

My Lexi is your own word collection. Search for a word, save it and, where we have a recording, hear how it's said. You can open free shared notes on it, written by AI, such as similar words, opposites and example sentences, where we have them. My Lexi holds 50 words free. More space costs in-app credits or XP (points you earn, for example for right answers).

For some words that show no notes yet, you can order deeper notes written by AI. These cover things such as where the word comes from and the words it's often used with. They're paid for with in-app credits, and you see the price before you choose. You get them straight away. A member of the WordRunner team then checks them, and approves, corrects or removes them. Some of the notes they approve or correct, such as the example sentence and the words it's often used with, can then be shown free to other learners who save the same word.

If you're under 16 in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, you'll need a parent's permission to order deeper notes.

Frankenstein · Chapter 1

…Everything was made to yield to her wishes and her convenience. He strove to shelter her, as a fair exotic is sheltered by the gardener, from every rougher wind and to surround her with all that could tend to excite pleasurable emotion in her soft and benevolent mind. Her health, and even the tranquillity of her hitherto constant spirit, had been shaken by what she had gone through. During the two years that had elapsed previous to their marriage my father had gradually relinquished all his public functions…

Audio

Your class's study cards, in the Library, can come with audio: audio logs, and audio summaries made by AI. The audio player plays both and keeps playing as you move between pages. It pauses while you read a book. Playing is free.

Write with your own words

Write sentences with the words you're learning, and AI marks each one. It gives one of four marks: Mastery, Partial credit, Needs work or Incorrect. It also says what went well, what's missing and how to improve. A Deep Dive adds a short lesson and two model sentences.

Answer set essay questions paragraph by paragraph. AI marks the whole essay on argument, use of evidence, depth of analysis and writing. At the Guided and Supported levels, the two that give the most help, it also scores each part of every paragraph. It names a strength, quotes your own words, points out what to fix and asks a question to push you further. Quotations from books in the app are checked against the text.

AI marking is paid for with in-app credits, and more credits cost real money. An essay shows its cost before you start.
