FOR TEACHERS AND ADMINS

Set the words — your students get the practice, and you see which words your class finds hardest.

Add word lists and video links to your group, choose its reading packs, or upload a document for AI to turn into a study card, with its key words to practise and theme tags (paid with your in-app credits). Your students practise the words, and the ones they studied earlier come back for review. We open the group for you; your students join with its code. Teacher accounts are not open yet: ask us to be among the first.

What you can do with your group

  • Upload word lists. AI fills in missing definitions and word forms.
  • Upload a Word or PDF document, and AI turns it into a study card: a title, theme tags and its key words to practise.
  • Add video links and web links to the study cards you make.
  • Link a document and an audio file to each level of your group's grammar practice, by pasting their web addresses. Your students can open the document and play the audio when they choose that level.
  • Choose reading packs for your group. A pack with two more books, The Sign of Four and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, is planned.
  • Sort your words into sets.
  • Post announcements, and set deadlines that count down on your students' home screen.
  • Plan a Word of the Day for the next two weeks: AI suggests advanced words on the themes of your group and its study cards, and you schedule them in one go. Your students see the day's word on their home screen.

What it costs

Uploads and Word of the Day suggestions use AI and are paid for from your in-app credits. You see the cost of a word-list upload before you confirm it, and an upload doesn't go ahead without enough credits.

  • Emails for parents with tips on the words your class is learning, written by AI (paid with your in-app credits).

HOW IT'S DESIGNED

Built on established teaching ideas

WordRunner is built around a few well-established ideas about how people learn. We haven't yet measured its results with a class. We'll update this page when our pilot is complete.

  • Recall practice: students fill a missing word into a sentence, or spell it from its meaning, not only pick it from a list.
  • Using words, not only recognising them: students also write sentences of their own with their words, and AI marks each one and explains its mark (paid with in-app credits).
  • Hints that step up: after a wrong answer, students can get a clue (such as the meaning, a line from a book with the word left out, or some of its letters), then the letters scrambled, then the answer.
  • Quick feedback: recall and spelling answers are marked at once, sentences by AI within seconds (paid with in-app credits), and essays after they are submitted.
  • Coming back to words: words studied earlier return for review.
  • Writing frames that step back: students write essays paragraph by paragraph using PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link). As they show they need less help, the AI feedback (paid with in-app credits) steps back from each part of a paragraph to the whole essay only, and a timed, exam-style essay can be chosen at any time. At the two levels with the least help, students can also use PETAL or Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis.
